Employment-based Green Card categories: EB-1, EB-2, EB-3
If your goal is not temporary work but a Green Card through employment, there are three main categories. They differ in the level of qualification required, whether an employer is needed, and how long the queue is.
- EB-1 — first preference (highest priority). For the strongest profiles: individuals of extraordinary ability (EB-1A), outstanding professors and researchers, and multinational executives. Often no labor certification (PERM) is required, and the queue is the shortest.
- EB-2 — second preference. For professionals with an advanced degree or exceptional ability. Usually requires an employer and PERM — except the EB-2 NIW route, where you can self-petition in the U.S. national interest.
- EB-3 — third preference. For skilled workers (2+ years of experience), professionals with a degree, and other workers. Requires a sponsoring employer and PERM; the queue is typically the longest of the three.
